The Magic of Color Alchemy
Step into the enchanting world of natural pigments as you learn to extract colors from nature's own palette. This workshop takes you through the fascinating history of pigments, revealing how artists across the centuries harnessed nature to create vivid and long-lasting colors.
You will be guided by Isabel, a master artist, through hands-on sessions where you'll create your own natural watercolors from materials sourced directly from the stunning Portuguese landscape. From the vibrant hues of flora and resins to the earthy tones of clays and food waste, you'll unlock the secrets of color alchemy.
In this workshop, you’ll work with:
-
Local Flora: Discover how mimosa flowers, fennel, olive, and eucalyptus leaves offer a vibrant color palette, connected to Portugal’s natural heritage.
-
Resins: Use the legendary "dragon's blood" resin, a material the Portuguese sailors used during the Age of Discoveries for its rich, long-lasting reds.
-
Berries: Experiment with intense, natural pigments from pigeonberry weed and elderberries, each with deep cultural significance.
-
Clays and Soils: Create earthy tones using Portugal’s rich red clay, a staple of natural art in the region.
-
Food Waste: Transform everyday onion skins, walnut husks, and olive residues into surprising, vibrant colors.
- Wine: Paint with the iconic red Vinhão wine, blending Portugal’s deep-rooted winemaking traditions with your artistic creation.
To expand your palette, we will also explore how adjusting pH levels and using mordants can create an infinite range of stunning colors, giving you total freedom in your botanical art.
