Since we have two new photography workshops in our Portugal Portfolio, I would like to dedicate this article to Portugal’s photography scene.

Portugal has long been known for its stunning natural landscapes, its beautiful, picturesque cities, and its rich cultural heritage.
Over the past 10 years, the country has also developed a thriving photography scene with both local and international photographers.

From the narrow streets of Lisbon to the rough coastline of the Algarve, Portugal offers infinite opportunities for all types of photographers to capture the beauty and diversity of this stunning country.

A Guide to Portugal’s Best Photography Spots and Resources

One of the best things about photography in Portugal in my opinion is its abundance of breathtaking locations to shoot. Whether you're looking to capture the natural beauty of the landscapes or the vibrant energy and charming streets of the cities, there are countless spots to choose from.

Let’s start with Lisbon

Portugal’s capital Lisbon offers a wealth of photography opportunities, from the charming alleyways of the historic Alfama district to the stunning views of the Tagus River. As a passionate photographer, make sure to visit the famous Miradouro de Santa Luzia and the Belém Tower. They offer panoramic views of the city and its landmarks. In case you are looking for a more secluded spot, head out of the city to the stunning cliffs and beaches of the Serra da Arrábida Natural Park.

In Lisbon, you can also meet Pedro, a professional and passionate local photographer who runs our "Portrait or Documental Photography Workshops".

You can meet him at his studio in Lisbon, listen to his journey to become a professional photographer and learn and practice the basic skills of either Portrait or Documental photography during his 4-hour workshop.

The Algarve

The Algarve region in the southern part of Portugal is known for its rough coastlines, dramatic cliffs, and beautiful beaches. Here, photographers can take incredible shots of the crashing waves and rocky cliffs at places like Praia do Tonel and Praia da Rocha. For a more peaceful scene, head to the quiet lagoon at Ria Formosa Natural Park, where you can photograph exotic birds and other wildlife.

Porto

The city of Porto is renowned for its impressive, Harry Potter-like architecture, including the famous Dom Luís I Bridge and the charming Ribeira district. Photographers will also like the historic São Bento train station, which features the traditional Portuguese tile work under stunning lighting. For a different perspective on the city, you can take a boat tour along the Douro River. From there, you can capture the beautiful colors of Porto’s surrounding hills and vineyards.

Discovering the Masters: 4 Well-Known Photographers from Portugal

Portugal has brought to life many talented photographers over the years, each with their unique styles and perspectives. From the black and white works of Fernando Lemos to the colorful portraiture of Helena Almeida, Portuguese photographers have made significant contributions to the art world of photography.

1. Fernando Lemos

Fernando Lemos is one of the most publicly known photographers in Portuguese history. Born in 1926 in Brazil, Lemos moved to Portugal in the 1940's and soon established himself as a leading figure in the country's avant-garde art scene.

Lemos's photographic works are characterized by their experimental nature, with a focus on the human form and a preference for black and white imagery. His ability to add even to the most banal subjects a sense of otherworldliness is a testament to his unique vision and technical ability.

2. Helena Almeida

Helena Almeida was born in 1934 in Lisbon and began her career as a painter before transitioning to photography in the 1970s. Known for her striking self-portraits, Almeida constantly pushed the boundaries of traditional portraiture, using her body as a canvas and incorporating elements of painting and sculpture into her works.

Almeida's photographs are famous for their vibrant colors and bold compositions. Her use of props and costumes to create surreal and dreamlike images has made her one of the most influential photographers of her generation.

3. Eduardo Gageiro

Eduardo Gageiro is a well-known photo-journalist who has been active in the Portuguese press since the 1950's. His photographs cover a wide range of subjects, from news events and political figures to everyday life in Lisbon and beyond.

Gageiro's iconic images of the 1974 Carnation Revolution in Portugal - a peaceful coup that ended decades of dictatorship - have become emblematic of the country's recent history.

4. João Pina

João Pina is a contemporary photographer who is still working today in Portugal. Born in 1980, he has made a name for himself with his photojournalistic works that explore social and political issues in Latin America, including crime, poverty, and state repression.

Pina's works are known for their raw and uncompromising vision, bringing attention to issues that are often overlooked in the mainstream media. His photographs have been exhibited in galleries and festivals around the world.
