Katherine Masters is an Anglo-Portuguese fine artist living in Cascais, a coastal resort town in Portugal, just west of Lisbon. She is a graduate of Goldsmiths University of London and Central Saint Martins.
Her artwork focuses primarily on the natural world and the human condition. Working mainly with watercolors, acrylic and photography, she draws upon a contemporary and rich visual language that seeks to investigate themes through the exploration of color.
Katherine is also a qualified yoga instructor, a graduate of The Power Yoga Company, London.
During our subcultalk with her, the fine artist and yogi tells us where she feels most alive and what she changed in her life to get more of this feeling. She also talks about her fears and how she overcomes her own sadness. Have a read here!
What's the art you're doing?
I am currently working across three mediums. My larger scale canvas pieces are quite abstract and I seek to transmit my emotions through the use of color and by directly influencing the paint with my hands. I work with the method of developing a concept before I paint, and I often take on subjects that relate to the human condition.
My watercolors start as abstract splashes of color and then develop a more figurative style as I work into them over time. I allow the paint and abstract shapes to inform me on where the watercolor should go and the stories just appear through an intuitive process. I use the technique of glazing with my watercolors which involves gradually applying layers of paint to the work.
My photographic work is focused on the natural environment and like the large scale paintings involves a concept to begin with. This work is mainly concerned with topics associated to environmental activism.
What's your favorite feeling?
My favorite feeling is the feeling of flow when I surf or ride a horse. There’s nothing quite as exciting as the unpredictability of riding a wave or a horse.
What's your favorite word?
Om.
What's the best wake-up time for you?
My preferred wake up time is 9.00am, so naturally I look forward to my weekends when I can wake up at this time!
What are you most afraid of?
I’m very disturbed by the stories of children being trapped in wells, or miners in mines, people stuck in submarines, and spaces they are unable to get out of. I fear tragedies like these.
What's the feeling you like the least?
I don’t enjoy the feeling of moving backwards in high speed moving objects. What makes you feel most alive?
I feel most alive when I am in the ocean. When I lived in Johannesburg as a child I often dreamt of living close to the sea. This dream came true when I turned 11 and moved to Portugal.
What inspires you most?
I am very inspired by other artists, past and present. I am also inspired by music and books. I’m more capable of feeling inspired when I am well rested, not stressed, well exercised and eating well, as I think is the case with most people.
What do you do when you feel sad?
When I feel sad I love to spend time with those closest to me and the best way for me to overcome sadness is doing things in nature, like hiking, surfing, walking or just spending time close to the sea.
Your favorite guilty pleasure?
I eat dark chocolate every night!
