subcultalk with textile artist Liat Kires from Tel Aviv, Israel

Liat Kires is a textile artist based in Matan, near Tel Aviv, Israel.
On subcultours, she offers three in-person workshops at her vibrant, colorful home studio. She also joined us for a subcultalk - get to know Liat and her creative world below.

• What type of art do you create?

I sculpt with soft materials, and through my art, I build a parallel world:
Gentle, colorful, and filled with optimism.

In my creative process, I seek out the connections between textures, materials, and colors. In order to create something new and unique, as in life, these connections between people, ideas, and places give the opportunity to understand each other better. In both worlds, a meeting point that brings beauty, opens new possibilities, and creates magical creations.

Through the workshops I host in my studio, I share the beauty and simplicity of making through unique creative kits I’ve designed, inviting anyone to bring a touch of color and playfulness into their own home. Between the fabrics and threads, I weave the threads of my heart and my hopeful prayers for a world that is more beautiful, kinder, and full of inspiration.

• When do you feel most productive?

At night, when everyone is asleep is my favorite time to be creative. I feel as though the world belongs to me.

• What or who inspires you?

I’m inspired by anything the color of yesterday’s sky, by the laundry my neighbor hung out today, and by the daisy flowers my husband brings me on Friday.

• In which “small” things do you find the most joy?

I don’t need more than a single stitch on a colorful fabric that begins to tell a story…

• Do you have a vision or goal you are working towards?

I hope that what I do will never end, that I will always be able to touch people in one way or another, create connections, and allow the energy around me to keep resonating, more and more each time.

• What does a well-lived life mean to you?

Living the small moments:
Waking up to a new day, being grateful for what I have, listening to birdsong, hugging my family, enjoying a sunset, walking in the forest, swimming in the sea, picking strawberries, smiling for no reason, and painting the world in as many colors as possible.

• What do you do when you feel "stuck"?

Usually, I make a change:
I take a sharp turn in my work, change direction, switch colors or materials, but sometimes I simply let it be. The moment will eventually come.

• What is your favorite feeling?

The feeling of awakening that moment when I open my eyes and realize that a day full of creation is waiting for me, and that so many connections can still happen.

• What are you most afraid of?

I’m afraid of the cruelty that might steal from me the freedom to think and to create.

Thank you, dear Liat, for sharing your time, energy, and a glimpse of your inner world with us!

Until next time - stay inspired and keep creating! :)
