Discover The Hidden Street Art Gems In Dresden

Hello again, it’s Tati, I got the chance to wander colorful streets again…

…this time I will be tagging you along to Dresden.

The city has a moved history, no need to mention the past which is tied to WWII destruction and the GDR shadows but now is up and coming as the beautiful gem that sparkles brightly beyond all these dark layers.

Back in the day, famous artist of the Romantic Era Caspar David Friedrich called the city his creative home for almost 40 years. Due to his 250th anniversary there are many special exhibitions going on at the moment in Berlin, Hamburg and of course Dresden (soon at the Albertinum and  Kupferstichkabinett). There is a remarkable bridge now from his legacy to modern Urban Art.
But more on that later.

Baroque vs. Street Art in Dresden

Baroque Buildings at the Altstadt and a Street Artist we already know from Hamburg in Dresden Neustadt: Frau Jules Kunst (ceramic plate) near Rothenburger Straße 25

Dresden is mostly known for its baroque buildings but there is so much more to discover in the city!

Most of the outdoor art works can be found in the areas of Friedrichstadt, Leipzig Vorstadt and Dresden Neustadt. Mainly South of the Alaunpark towards Alaun Straße, Rothenburger Straße, Louisen Straße  and Böhmische Straße. These are some of the artists that can be spotted: Optic Ninja, Liz Art, Ghetto Trash, Lembo, Milchmann.

Best Street Art in Dresden: Circling back to Caspar David Friedrich

…as promised,I still owe you the Urban-Art-Caspar-David-Friedrich-connection. The artist Milchmann came along with a wonderful coup to honor the 250th anniversary of the best known German Artist of the Romantic Era with paste-ups throughout Dresden-Neustadt (new town).

Past and Present: Artist Milchmann at Julie-Salinger-Weg / near Böhmische Straße 34.

As always our trusted source Vagabundler put Names and Location of some of the art works on the map again.

A brief history of the Best Urban Art and Street Art in Dresden

The emerging art scene attracted the international visiting exhibition “Magic City” and created the Urban Art Festival named “LackStreicheKleber” (established in 2014), comprised an Urban Art Open Air Gallery (encompassing 15 different murals) and there are even some street art tours that can be booked with Night Walk Dresden

Like always with Street Art: Hard to lock the eye onto one piece of art only (Görlitzer Straße 15).

Beyond the best Street Art in Dresden: There is even more art to be found…

20 years ago the Dresden Kunsthof-Passage came to be. Abandoned Backyards were transformed into what is now known as “Yard of Elements", “Yard of Light”, “Yard of Animals”, “Yard of Fantasy Creatures” as well as “Yard of Metamorphoses”. The yard is located between Alaunstraße 70 and Görlitzer Str. 25.

The different yards at the Kunsthofpassage.

To wrap up the Street Art in Dresden Chapter: In the Neustadt, there are also many cute cafes/ bars where you can refuel after your street art scavenger hunt. The ones that caught my eye mostly were the Café Continental (great value for money and large variety of food choices at the breakfast) the Horst Vier Vogel Bar (they brew their own beer!)  and the Café Andalieb (cozy Syrian Café with quality coffee and on Fridays and Saturdays they even offer live music from time to time).

…and with that being said: There is so much more to discover - art wise and food wise! Dresden, I’ll be back for sure.

Love,
Tati
